I am a Consultant Clinical Psychologist and Psychoanalytic Psychotherapist with over twenty years experience of treating individuals both privately and in the NHS. I routinely treat a variety of problems including but not exclusively - anxiety, depression, varying kinds of trauma, lack of confidence and self -esteem, personality disorder and self -harming behaviour. I offer supervision and consultancy to psychologists, psychotherapists and other mental health professionals on an individual or group basis, including around serious incidents/ incidents of risk. I am a visiting lecturer at Oxford University and the University of Hertfordshire.
I am registered with the Health & Care Professions Council (HCPC), the British Psychological Society (membership number 092394) and the British Psychoanalytic Council (membership number 25132). I adhere to the ethical standards laid down by my professional bodies and their guidelines on continuous professional development (CPD).
All of us have probably had the experience of not really understanding why we do certain things that we do (we say we want to have better relationships with others, yet keep losing our tempers, or getting into relationships that have similar patterns. We say we want to lose weight and yet keep on overeating...). Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy helps us to understand the unconscious parts of our minds - the parts of ourselves that we may not know very well but which may be having a significant impact on our feelings and behaviours. These aspects of ourselves are quite likely to be linked to childhood - all families go through tough times (big and small- perhaps financial difficulties, parents mental health problems, bereavements or indeed major traumas) and these may still be impacting on you in ways that you don't yet know. Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy offers a safe, confidential space in which to begin to understand yourself on a deep level, and with a therapist who can hear what you have to say, no matter how hard it may be to say it. There is an increasing evidence base to support the effectiveness of Psychoanalytic Psychotherapy and unlike other therapies which may produce a quick but perhaps not very long lasting change, this way of working aims to make changes to your way of being in the world which are deeper, and will stay with you as you go forward through the different stages of your life.
People come to me for help a wide range of issues. Here are a few of the more common difficulties that can be supported through psychotherapy:
Feelings of stress or anxiety
Panic attacks
Relationship problems
Grief, loss or bereavement
Trauma and post-traumatic stress
Abuse
Depression
Problems with confidence or self-esteem
Anger management
Issues relating to sexuality
Difficulties at work or in retirement
Problems with family or school life
I usually suggest an initial consultation to meet. This might take place over a couple of sessions. In these meetings you and I will have the opportunity to explore what has brought you to seek help. It is an opportunity for me to get to know you and for you to find out how I work. If both you and I feel it would be helpful to continue working together I would offer you a regular slot on at least a weekly basis (though some people will find it helpful to come more than once a week). This will be at the same time and in the same place each week. Therapy may be short or long term, depending on what you wish to achieve.
In our sessions we will think about your family background and early life, as well as your adult relationships both now and in the past. With time you are likely to notice the patterns between them.
I am also available to offer supervision to professionals.
Therapy Sessions last 50 minutes will take place on at least a weekly basis, at the same time and in the same place. The fee is £70 per session. I prefer payment by bank transfer. I have some flexibility around session times and if you are far away I am happy to negotiate some in person contact and for some of the sessions to take place remotely. I aim to respond to requests within 24 hours. You are welcome to contact me by email or by phone. My consulting room is in easy reach of Chesham, Amersham, Berkhamsted, Hemel Hempstead and surrounding areas.
Please feel free to contact me if you have more questions or would like to arrange an initial consultation. This enables us to discuss the reasons you are considering psychotherapy and whether this is the right treatment for you (as opposed to other types of treatment such as CBT).
You can also call me on 07958311541 if you would prefer to speak to me first.
All enquiries are usually responded to within 24 hours
